I started as a helper in July last year, and I just received my CDL from the Casella Training School. My dad is a driver and works at the same division as me, so I have just been around the industry, and he has talked about it plenty to know that I could have a career here.
I like talking to people, so whenever a customer comes out and talks, I enjoy it. We had a woman driving her car the other day who stopped to tell us that she appreciated us, and I loved that. It makes you feel needed and appreciated. This may sound cheesy, but when a kid sees a garbage truck and gets excited, I think that is pretty cool. I am happy to make their day when I can.
I want to be a reliable teammate. I don’t want to let my coworkers down or let my dad down because he loves his job and shows up every day, no matter what. I always want to be the best at what I do, which is sometimes a double-edged sword when trying to achieve perfection, but it keeps me motivated. My dad holds me to a high standard, but I also hold him to a high standard. I want to be as good at my job as he is, maybe even better.
I come from a customer service background, so I just try to be nice to everyone and assume the best. I have a route full of customers I will see or interact with, but from their perspective, they will only see me once. I need to make sure they have a good experience in that one instance where they see me because that is what they will remember.
I aspire to be a side-load driver someday and help train future drivers, work in the safety realm, or hold a supervisor position. There is no ceiling here, you can go in so many different directions. I don’t think I am going to ever work for another company. Casella takes care of you, and you get to do a cool job. I can’t imagine going anywhere else now.
