Harnessing Innovation: Casella's Willimantic MRF Receives High-Tech Upgrade

Willimantic MRF

Casella’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Willimantic, CT currently processes more than 60,000 tons of recyclables annually and has recently undergone a complete retrofit, implementing the most current state-of-the-art technologies. The upgrades have resulted in the company’s ability to process up to 165,000 tons of material and provide best-in-class operations for its customers.

ABOUT OUR MRF RETROFIT

Cutting-edge technology updates as part of the retrofit include:

  • 25 tons per hour (TPH) capacity
  • Four optical sorters for cleaning fiber
  • One ballistic separator used in finishing position
  • Two optical sorters on the container line
  • Aspiration points for film removal
  • Glass processing system

The Willimantic Single Sort Recycling system, initially installed in 2008 to process 20 tons per hour of single-stream recycling, saw its throughput decline to around 15 tons per hour as it aged. This reduction, coupled with the evolving material stream and increased volume, prompted the local and regional recycling team to begin designing retrofit concepts in Spring 2022.

By July of last year, Casella received approval from the State of Connecticut DEEP to deconstruct the old system and upgrade the facility. The upgrades included a new sorting system, power infrastructure, lighting, a replacement tipping floor, new pavement, and enhanced fire suppression systems.

Despite these extensive changes, the team successfully diverted Connecticut's recycling to other trusted locations and continued processing metals and mattresses on-site. The project was completed on time and within budget, showcasing the team's resilience and skill.

The new Machinex system, commissioned in February this year, now allows Casella Willimantic Recycling to process up to 35 tons per hour.  Additionally, Casella partnered with the Eversource Efficiency team to enhance the facility's energy efficiency.
