Casella is helping to break down language barriers and advance employee growth after launching a free, on-site interactive English language literacy and fluency program at its material recovery facility (MRF) in Charlestown, Mass.

Originally designed to assist non-English speaking employees in passing their hoisting license test, an assessment that is only offered in English and is a requirement of the state of Massachusetts to operate heavy machinery, the course graduated its first class of employees in June.

“The goal of the program is pretty straightforward,” explained Jonathan Reynolds, Operations Manager of the MRF. “To help our employees learn the English language and assist them in growing both professionally and personally. At Casella, we want all our employees to have the same opportunities to advance and grow.”

The course curriculum, which officially launched in December, features a 24-week program that meets once a week for four hours. Program teachings include basic English language concepts that help employees better understand fundamental elements such as the alphabet, numbers, and common phrases.

Reynolds explained that in addition to preparing employees to complete the hoisting licensure test, the program has also contributed to a more inclusive work environment and opens the door for further career opportunities within the industry.

“As managers, it is our job to make sure that our employees have the tools and the support they need to be successful in their positions,” added Reynolds. “It takes a team to win, and this is just one step in the right direction for our team to be successful.”
