Driving Change: Rochester's Kixx Diaz

Driver Mairtza 'Kixx' Diaz

Rochester, NY driver Maritza 'Kixx' Diaz made Casella history when she became the first female to earn her CDL Class-A upgrade through the Casella CDL Training School. While her background in mechanics gave her a competitive edge when entering the waste management industry, it is her can-do attitude and steadfast dedication to customer service that has propelled her forward into a rewarding career path.

How did you get your start in the industry?

When I was younger, I was a mechanic for nineteen years. After that, I started to explore the transportation business. I found that the waste industry has a big transportation component, so I became a driver. I started driving small roll-off trucks, and then after I got my CDL-B, I started to move up to larger truckers. I have now been with the company for almost five years and am also a part of our safety committee.

What motivated you to continue to grow your career?

I feel like a little kid in a candy store when I am out on the road. It motivates me to want to grow and what inspired me to attend the CDL school. I am the only female roll-off driver at my division. It makes me proud and excited and makes me want to persist in my goals.

How does your team support you in your career journey?

The people I come in contact with during work are all really helpful in supporting me and reminding me that I am capable. I see from other drivers that they respect me and tell me I am doing a good job, which is nice.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Traveling and engaging with people and kids. I love serving my community and interacting with our customers. When I am in a residential area, there is an especially great opportunity to connect. I have the chance to talk with a lot of people in my community, and being in contact with them and having a relationship with them helps everyone. For example, if I see an older person struggling because of their age, I will remember the house, so next time, I can bring the bin up by myself. These small things help the community and make me proud.

What advice do you have for other females looking to join the industry?

‘Anybody can do it’ is my motto. There will always be some challenges, but if you stay positive, you can do it.
