Casella Joins BU at Annual Sustainability Case Competition

Paul Ligon BU Case Competition

It was an honor to join the more than 70 teams, 24 universities, and diverse panel of judges for the second annual Boston University Questrom School of Business $50k Sustainability Case Competition this past weekend! Members of our Casella team not only served as on-site industry experts and presented the event’s keynote address but also witnessed first-hand the creative passion and interest in driving a more sustainable future that filled the entire room.

In 2022, Casella helped launch the inaugural competition by providing guided support as an industry expert, working closely with the case writers and competition organizers to ensure each case was designed to represent practical sustainability challenges. Through this partnership, Casella and the Case Competition team toured local facilities, participated in several interview sessions, and even attended an annual review to gain a deeper understanding of the featured topics.

“Boston University has demonstrated incredible leadership in the sustainability space,” said Paul Ligon, Casella Senior Vice President of Sustainable Growth and 2023 Case Competition Keynote Speaker. “The problem of waste is not unique to BU. But what is unique to BU is that they have decided to look deeply at how they can turn that into an opportunity, and that’s why we are honored and privileged to be on the team that is supporting those efforts, whether that is through the case competition or the services we are providing. To succeed, we must innovate and find new ways to manage materials more sustainably, and it’s through opportunities like the case competition that we get real-world, pragmatic, tangible ways of implementing change.”
