Casella Hosts Educational and Fun Family Event

NCES Open House

Nearly 300 visitors enjoyed a picture-perfect fall day in New Hampshire’s North Country attending an open house held by Casella Waste Systems, Inc. at the NCES Landfill. The annual event is an opportunity for community members to tour the facilities, and to learn about the company’s holistic approach to waste and resource management.

Cathy Dubrielle of Dalton, New Hampshire won this year’s raffle prize, which was $500 in heating oil for the upcoming winter. Cathy chose to donate the prize to another Dalton family whom she knew to have a greater need and Casella matched her donation bringing the total gift to $1,000.

“We love engaging with and helping to build community through this event each year,” said Kevin Roy, NCES Division Manager. “To see Ms. Dubrielle’s selflessness on display in support of her neighbors was really a perfect finishing touch to an amazing day in the North Country.”

Visitors from 14 New Hampshire towns received a site tour with information about how a modern landfill is operated from landfill engineers, and were able to see the site from above thanks to drone footage.

New to the event this year was a tour of the Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facility that is set to come online in February. Through a partnership with Rudarpa, Inc. the facility is designed to capture the landfill gas which is currently being flared and separate it into marketable gases, with primary emphasis on methane and carbon dioxide. Once processed, the RNG will be transported by truck for injection into existing pipeline facilities owned by Liberty Utilities. The emissions reduction from converting the landfill gas into transportation fuel is estimated to be 78,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, which is equivalent to taking more than 15,000 passenger cars off the road.

“We’re proud of this facility and it’s great to be able to showcase the hard work the team does to keep the community and environment safe every day,” Roy said. “It’s also very eye-opening for people when they come to the site and gain a better understanding of the different lines of business we have, and how we’re at the leading edge of resource management.”

Roy expressed heartfelt thanks to all the local partners and volunteers who made the event a success. “We couldn’t do what we do without our amazing team of Casella employees. For them to come out and volunteer their time on a Saturday alongside the Veterans2Veterans group, fire, safety, and police organizations, our touch-a-truck partners from Haynes Trucking, LaFlammes Go Cart Racing, St. Cyr Vintage Snowmobiles and all the other vendors just really illustrates what a great community we share.”
