Measuring What Matters: Inside a Waste Audit

UMass Chan Waste Audit

Understanding waste is the first step toward reducing it. Casella recently partnered with UMass Chan Medical School to conduct a hands-on waste audit, sorting and measuring material streams to uncover opportunities to increase recycling and divert waste. The findings help inform future educational efforts, enhance recycling accessibility, and support data-driven decisions that advance the campus’s sustainability goals.

By examining which materials are being recycled correctly and which may be ending up in the wrong stream, the audit provides a clear picture of where improvements can have the greatest impact. The data collected identifies opportunities for better signage, optimized bin placement, and targeted waste reduction strategies tailored to the campus environment. It also supports identifying recyclable materials that may benefit from regional recycling solutions, helping advance resource recovery and strengthen the circular economy.
